100 Chai street - A revelation in taste sensation

100 chai street marlborough mainUs British tend to think that we know all about Indian food. chai streetWe can trace the origins of this to our colonial ties with the subcontinent and the subsequent immigration which made the Indian restaurant a staple of every high street in the country. Chicken Tikka Masala was even voted the nation's favourite dish in a survey carried out several years ago. But what we eat in our neighbourhood restaurant is a very long way from the manifestly subtle and profound flavours of authentic Indian home-cooked food.

On a mission to educate the taste buds of Marlborough are Sudip Roy and his wife, Aarti, the talented chef behind 100 Chai Street. Developing something of a cult following, their Intimate and laid back restaurant and tea room is open Tuesday to Sunday for everything from tea and meetha (cakes and puddings) to a banquet of dishes which reflect the diversity and arresting flavours of authentic Indian cuisine. Standout dishes included Amritsari Fish Fry, flaky and moist cod pieces fried in spiced batter and served with curly masala fries, Kolkata Kaathi rolls, flaky parathas packed with special stuffing and served with yogurt mint chutney, kachumber salad and chatpata far far crackers. There is even a full Englishstaani breakfast, the ultimate fusion food which includes eggs, masala baked beans, aloo tikki and bacon rashers. Main dishes are all served with rice, paratha, lentil, salad and raita. It is all more infinitely wonderful and delicious than any Indian food you have tasted before. Grab a table while you still can.
