About us

A Marlborough institution, Polly’s Tea Rooms have been serving delicious teas, breakfasts and lunches since 1912. Founded by Miss Jean Leith Hay and Miss Janet McCloud (one of the original suffragettes), tea rooms were a safe place for ladies to meet in the early years of the 20th Century. Over one hundred years later, Polly’s is still going strong and was recently ranked 15th in The Daily Telegraph’s list of the best 30 places for afternoon tea in the UK.

Beloved by such auspicious customers as Poet Laureate John Betjeman and the Duchess of Cambridge during her school days at Marlborough College, Polly’s bake all their cakes on-site using the same recipes which have been in use since the 1930s. It is the consistently high quality of the locally sourced produce which goes into all their dishes and the scrupulous ethics driving their business which has guaranteed Polly’s long-lasting success.

Open from 8.30am, Polly’s serves a great selection of breakfasts from their classic full English or vegetarian breakfast at only £4.95 until 11am daily to Eggs Benedict, avocado, chilli and lime with eggs to a simple but perfectly toasted slice of bloomer with jams and marmalade.

Lunches range from traditional dishes like home-made lasagne with garlic bread and steak and ale pie to exotic Thai green curry as well as salads, soups, risottos and a full range of sandwiches.

Afternoon teas are what made Polly’s famous and start at £7.95 for a classic cream tea or the more lavish Polly’s Luxury High Tea at £17.95 for that special occasion. New additions to this decadent ritual include a fresh mango mousse, pot au chocolate sweetened by honey and darling miniature mince pies! All Polly’s baked goods are made on site in their bakery. Gluten free dishes available at all times throughout the day.

The Polly Tea Rooms have a mouth-watering selection of products; from cakes and jams to locally produced teas, preserves and fashionable china. Their traditional food craft skills are very much alive and all cakes are hand-crafted by their talented bakers – not by machines. Skilled pastry makers and confectioners produce a wonderful array of treats: classic, scrumptious cakes slices, rich and hearty fruit cakes, gorgeous chocolate eclairs and a fantastic selection of gluten free cakes and so much more!

Our Bakery, Our Ethics

The Polly Tea Rooms value ethically and locally sourced products that are good for both the consumer and our community, constantly looking to work with local farmers to ensure the products they use meet high standards. All baked-goods are made in-house using traditional recipes and artisan skills rather than machines. Proud members of the UK Tea & Infusions Association, Polly’s sources high quality products which are vital in making your experience at the Tea Rooms the best it can be.
