Avebury Manor visitor information

on 14 August 2017.

Avebury Manor is a 16th Century Grade One listed property run by the National Trust in Avebury, near Marlborough. The Manor offers a rare opportunity for a barrier-free country house experience. With the exception of the Chinese wallpaper in the Georgian dining room, you are encouraged to get up close and really interact with your surroundings; have a lie down on the bed, play billiards in the snooker room and sit at the heavily laden Tudor dinner table.

Made famous by the 2011 television series, The Manor Reborn, nine of Avebury Manor’s rooms and part of the garden were re-decorated and re-designed in five different styles: Tudor, Queen Anne, Georgian, Victorian and 20th Century to give visitors an authentic feel for the centuries the Manor has stood. This imaginative process drew on expertise, historical research and inventories from other houses of the selected periods to recreate inspirational interiors.

The Manor is reputedly haunted by several ghosts. Sir John,Stawell a Civil War Royalist is said to haunt the Cavalier bedroom, whilst his ward ‘The White Lady’ haunts the house and ground tapping men on the shoulder to see if they are the lover who never returned from war. The Tudor bedchamber feels so uneasy at times, even the guides will not enter.

Avebury Manor Garden is arranged as a series of 'rooms', each with a different character, including Kitchen Garden, Topiary Garden, Lions Walk, Church Garden, East Garden, Half Moon Garden, Orchard, Monks Garden and South Lawn with picnic blankets and steamer chairs for visitors to relax and enjoy a picnic or just a book.
