Eric Gill Exhibition

Sculptor, typographic designer, engraver and printmaker, Eric Gill (1882-1940) is among the most revered artists of the Arts and Craft movement. A controversial figure, Gill was a passionate Catholic as famous for his sexual behaviour as he was for his work.

From 6th March, The White Horse bookshop will be

hosting an exhibition of Gill prints from 1915-1930 in their impressive gallery space. Marlborough's shopping - A perfect blend

Marlborough perfect blend

Marlborough is a seriously good shopping destination and it would not be difficult to divest yourself of the entire contents of your wallet during a gentle stroll along its pavements.  To start with, there's the look of the place: Marlborough's  wide and inviting HIgh Street boasts a diversity of beautifully-styled stores housed in  historic buildings which are lovingly maintained and full of original items you never knew you needed.  In Marlborough you can get everything  from the weekly shop to fine jewellery and everything in between.

It boasts the perfect blend of reputable chains: Mint Velvet, Kath Kidston, Waitrose, Boots, Costa etc, alongside some very smart boutique traders. Of Marlborough's 200 + shops, a sizeable number are of the off-beat and independent variety, selling original and stylish items that needn't cost the earth.  An example of affordable quality is Luna Boutique at 139 High Street, which sells fashion forward, easy to wear, affordable designs in an on-trend colour palette.

Another Marlborough gem is The White Horse Bookshop a at 136 High Street. The best bookshop for miles, this Marlborough institution has been on its current site in a 16th century townhouse since 1949 and boasts over 20,000 titles housed over two, exquisitely stocked floors.  In addition, this cultural destination has  a brand new art studio, event and exhibition space where they hold a comprehensive series of art workshops.

More typical of the country market town is Landmark at 128-129 High Street where you can buy high quality country wear, walking and travel clothing as well as premium footwear, accessories and some sporting goods.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the town has market days where you can buy everything from fruit and veg to a nice pashmina from a fantastic selection of stalls.  Market days are extremely popular when the cafes and coffee shops are fit to burst.

One of the great things about Marlborough is that even though it boasts some beautifully high-end stores, you don't have to spend a fortune.  There is something for every taste and budget from recycled designer clothes to charity shop bargains and lots of inviting coffee shops and restaurants to rest in between retail missions.
