Local businessman speaks out

Local businessman David Dudley has written an open letter to the people of Marlborough about parking in the town.  As the owner of David Dudley Jeweller’s on the high street, he is passionate about keeping Marlborough’s thriving community and tourism alive and projects that with investment of subsidised parking on the common, this might become a reality.

He writes that the common could accommodate 100 spaces and anticipates the increased income to the town could reach upwards of 30k, with funds generated being utilised for community resources such as the Youth Club.

The suggestion is one of many innovative ways that Marlborough can reduce congestion and encourage more shoppers to visit the High Street.

New Parking Charges in Marlborough

Wiltshire Council are in the process of introducing another increase to the annual parking fees to over £700 per year. I feel it is time for the people who live and work in Marlborough to respond.

Within the boundary of Marlborough we have a spacious Common which is used for sports and events. Being a large communal space, why not create additional parking on the Common for people who live and work in Marlborough at a reasonable rate. This way we can offer more High Street parking to visitors to the town.

I suggest 100 spaces at £320 per year which would bring an income of £32,000 for the Town Council. Our youth centre, now re-opened by the Town Council, and other organisations desperately need funds to continue their work for the community, so what better way is there in raising funds so urgently needed and knowing that your parking fees benefit the local community.

The Kennet Community Transport bus (known to some as the Jubilee Bus) could assist by providing a pick up/drop of service morning and afternoon, and during the day the Tesco Bus and the regular services could assist.

It is only a matter of all of us working together for Marlborough. Please show your support by writing to the Mayor and your Town Council."
